Why you need to know what Scrum is
At the moment, Scrum is the most popular of all the flexible Agile technology. One of its main features is that it relies on teamwork.
Scrum - what is it
In the world of entrepreneurship, the emphasis in the implementation of a project in most cases is on the individual. That is, each employee of the company is responsible for the work assigned and reports for it.
However, any production exists primarily due to group efforts. The best employees can, of course, do the work faster than others. But the performance of the company is increased primarily by brilliant teams.
When carrying out projects according to the Scrum method (pronounced not “Scrum”, but “Scrum”), it is primarily the group in which each person performs a particular function. That is, the project participants in this case, unlike the usual methods, are not people of the same specialty, but different ones.
The process of work on the Scrum-methodology is divided into several parts with setting specific goals. After reaching the minimum tasks, the team reports to the customer. Very often, this technique is used, for example, by teams involved in software development.
A simple example of the organization of work on the Scrum-technology
In ordinary companies, accountants work together with other accountants, programmers - with programmers, etc. When using the Scrum technology, the situation is completely different.

History of creation
Actually the concept of “scram” saw the light in the 80s of the last century.Scientists from Japan, H. Takeuchi and I. Nonaki, who introduced the success of projects implemented by mini-groups without general specialization, introduced it into use.
In 1993, it was this original approach that was used in the development of the management methodology for Easel by programmer Joseph Sutherland. This American specialist and officially called him Scrum.
A couple of years later, programmer Ken Schwaber adapted the Scram technology to the industry as a whole. Since then, Scrum has begun to gain popularity and today many companies in the world work using just this technique.
Why you should learn about Scrum: technology benefits
The huge popularity of Scrum-methodology in the world won first of all for the fact that its use allows implementing projects twice as fast. In addition, this technology, in contrast to those used previously, allows us to ultimately receive exactly the product that is needed by the client.
The advantages of the Scrum-methodology, among other things, include the possibility of:
- minimization of the project budget;
- daily monitoring of the progress of work;
- making corrections directly in the course of implementation.
Are there any disadvantages
There are many advantages to the flexible control technology of Scrum. But this method has, like any other, of course, its own drawbacks. By cons Scrum can be attributed, for example:
- A large number of exceptions. To complete the project when working on this technique, unlike the traditional, with a low budget, insufficient qualifications of workers, an incompetent manager will simply not be possible.
- Difficulties at the conclusion of contracts. When applying this technique, there is no fixed terms of reference or budget. And this makes it difficult to legalize the project.
- Not too wide specialization method. In some cases, not all stages of project development can be implemented by Scrum.
In addition to teamwork and the presence of mini-goals, the features of the Scrum methodology include:
- Lack of power hierarchy. In normal companies, downstream employees do what they are ordered by their superiors. When using Scrum techniques, all team members work together.
- Coherence of action. There is no hierarchy in the team in this case, but the activities of the project participants are sent by the owner of the final product.It is this person who sets the main vector of the group’s work.
- Collective responsibility for the result. If the project fails, instead of looking for the culprit, the team identifies the cause of the problem and fixes it.
Scrum-project management consists of 3 main parts:
Each of these parts in turn also includes several elements.
There are three roles in Scrum:
- the owner of the product is the client's representative;
- Scrum-master - one of the team members, directing its development;
- developers - a team of 5-9 people responsible for achieving the selected tasks.
The owner of the product during the implementation of the scrum project, interacting with the team, coordinates its actions, presents the requirements and ultimately accepts and evaluates the results.
Scrum master, among other things, solves problems that interfere with work. His responsibilities also include creating team spirit in the group.
The primary task of the developers is to set realistic goals at each stage and achieve them in the planned time frame.
Mini-stages with specific goals in Skrama called sprints. Each such phase usually lasts 2-4 weeks. The task of the team is at the final stage of each sprint to get the finished product, which can be demonstrated to the client.
Practitioner in Scrum, as well as roles, provides for three:
- daily meetings - held in the morning before work;
- sprint review meetings - held at the end of the phase;
- sprint emergency stop - cessation of work before the deadline in case of impossibility to complete the task or on the initiative of the customer.
The main artifacts of any Scrum project are:
- product log - list of customer requirements, sorted by importance;
- sprint log for micro tasks;
- sprint chart - display changes in the amount of work.
The implementation of each goal from the sprint magazine to the group operating according to the Scrum-method is usually given no more than 2 days.
