Talk, listen and change lives - Time to Talk Day 2018
Today Is It's Time to Talk Day
Here at REDBOOK, we are honored to once again be part of Liz Claiborne Inc's annual It's Time to Talk Day, a day set aside for people to talk to each other about a topic they might normally shy away from—domestic violence. All day long, around the country, goverment officials, talk radio personalities, domestic violence advocates, businesses, schools, and moms just like you and me will be talking about this issue.
The domestic violence statistics are sobering: Domestic violence affects nearly one in three women at some point in their lifetime. 26% of all female murder victims in 1995 were killed by their partners. Relationship violence is also affecting more and more tweens and teens: 62% of tweens (ages 11-14) who have been in a relationship say they know friends who have been verbally abused (called stupid, worthless, ugly, etc) by a boyfriend/girlfriend. One in three teenagers report knowing a friend or peer who has been hit, punched, kicked, slapped, choked or physically hurt by their partner.
As the mom of an 8-year-old girl who seems to be growing into teendom every day, I find these numbers especially frightening.
I encourage you to take a moment today to reach out to someone—a coworker, sister, friend, neighbor, daughter—and start up a conversation about domestic violence. And if you are the parent of a tween or teen boy or girl, it is never too early to start talking to them about what makes up a healthy, loving relationship.
