Skin Experts' Tips for Seasonal Changes

When fall hits, you set aside your surf spray, throw on a coat, and embrace the cold. But what about your skin? Your face confronts the cold head on and, after a summer of laidback skincare and plenty of sun, needs to be properly prepped for battle. So we asked a group of experts, from New York-based dermatologist Dr. Frederic Brandt to Tata Harper, whose organic Vermont farm produces some of our favourite products, to tell us their tips for maintaining radiant summer skin all winter long.

“Shed the dead skin,” says LA-based dermatologist Dr. Jessica Wu. “Leftover sun damage from summer can lead to dull skin, which is caused by flakes of dead skin cells that don’t allow the light to reflect off of it.” If you favor a gritty scrub, try Renee Rouleau’s Mint Buffing Beads () or Dr. Wu’s own Enzyme Micro-Polish Exfoliator (). If you have sensitive skin, try Yves Saint Laurent’s Gommage Natural Action Exfoliator ()—it exfoliates without physical granules.

Tata Harper, who both grows the ingredients for and actually produces her products on her organic farm in Vermont, says, “I think getting a facial at the start of each new season is a great way to give the skin a fresh glow, whether it's deep cleansing following summer's oily months or a moisture facial as winter begins.” For an at-home facial, try exfoliating with one of the previous scrubs, steaming your face, and using Harper’s Resurfacing Mask (), followed by a rich moisturizer, like L’Oreal’s Hydra-Renewal Continuous Moisture Cream ().

But don’t go overboard, says Dr. Gregory Brown, the founder of ReVive Skincare. In the winter, if you have an intense skincare regimen, it’s better to back off a bit.” He says to choose between a chemical and physical exfoliant—so if you use your Clarisonic (5), skip your Somme Institute Exfoliating Transport Pads (). “Your blood vessels constrict when it’s cold so the skin is much more susceptible to injury.”

Don’t forget your lips! You’ll want to have fun with fall’s wine lipstick and it won’t work well on chapped skin. “Avoid waxy stick lip balms which can dry your lips even more,” Dr. Wu says. She recommends an ointment instead, like Aquaphor (), Kiehls Lip Balm #1 (), or Burt’s Bees Super Glossy Lip Shine (). “Slick on a thick layer before going to bed and apply again in the morning!”

If your skin still feels thirsty when you wake up in the morning, Harper suggests trying an oil in place of your go-to cream for a heavy dose of hydration. “It not only works overnight to soften and deeply hydrate, but it can be used as a last layer of environmental protection to protect your skin from the drying effects of cold wind,” she says of her own Replenishing Nutrient Complex () (though it holds true of most oils). We also like Boots Botanics Facial Oil (), Peter Thomas Roth’s Oilless Oil (), and Sponge’s Ladi Avokanto ().

Whatever you do, don’t forget to finish your routine with an eye cream. “Always, always apply an emollient eye cream both morning and night!” Dr. Brandt says. Try Mario Badescu’s Hydro Emollient Cream (), Perricone MD’s Cold Plasma Eye (), or Revive’s Renewal Eye Cream (0).

And the most important thing you can do? Well, no surprise here—wear sunscreen! Dr. Brown says too many women forget to wear adequate sunscreen when temperatures drop. Don’t. Instead layer the same SPF you would mid-July.
