Why Ending Texts With A Period Makes People Look Like Jerks
“Sorry, I’m busy.” This phrase might seem like an innocent, honest response to a text but unbeknownst to you, science has proven that by adding a full stop at the end you’re nothing but a goddamn jerk.
The phrase with an exclamation point: “Sorry, I’m busy!” suddenly transforms a cold and dismissive message into a sensitive and upbeat response, fit for someone you truly care about. In fact, a new found that people who use full stops in texts are perceived as less sincere. It’s almost as a bad as responding with the classicly cold “K”.
“Texting is lacking many of the social cues used in actual face-to-face conversations,” said associated professor Celia Kin. “When speaking, people easily convey social and emotional information with eye gaze, facial expressions, tone of voice, pauses, and so on.”
If you can’t avoid the full stop, we recommend an emoji to soften the blow.
