Dad wants to ban unvaccinated kids from son's school
Father Wants School to Prohibit Unvaccinated Children From Attending
Carl and Jodi Krawitt's six-year-old son, Rhett, had been fighting leukemia for four and a half years, but is now officially in remission. However, since his immune system is left damaged by years of chemotherapy, it cannot withstand a vaccination shot, which means he's vulnerable to childhood illnesses like measles. Doctors say it may be months before his body will be healthy enough for vaccinations.
Rhett's school in Marin County, CA has a seven percent personal belief exemption rate (compared to the state average of 2.5), which means parents reserve the right to send their children to school unvaccinated against highly communicable diseases.
Rhett's oncologist, Dr. Robert Goldsby said, "When your immune system isn't working as well, it allows many different infections to be worse. It's not just Rhett. There are hundreds of other kids in the Bay Area that are going through cancer therapy, and it's not fair to them. They can't get immunized; they have to rely on their friends and colleagues and community to help protect them."
Carl and Jodi are fighting for the school to request immunization as a non-negotiable condition of attendance. Of course, children shouldn't be administered vaccines for medical reasons would be excused.
The Krawitts's received an ambiguous response from Superintendent Steven Herzog who said the issue would be "monitored."
According to KQED, Marin Country health officer Matt Willis, sees this as a legal matter. He questions whether or not it would be right to force unvaccinated children to stay home, despite having no recorded cases of illness in their town.
Carl told KQED that during a parent meeting at his daughter's school, someone brought up a reminder to never allow children to bring peanut products to school because it would put kids with allergies at risk. He responded, "In the interest of the health and safety of our children, can we have the assurance that all the kids at our school are immunized?"
Reportedly, some parents who choose not to immunize their children were irritated by Carl's public statement about the necessity of vaccines.
