A Woman's Day In...Tarrytown, New York
Eye-Popping Pumpkins:The Great Jack O'Lantern Blaze
It's arguably the most popular Halloween event in town, says Monique. As you walk the grounds of Van Cortlandt Manor, an 18th-century farmhouse, once night falls, you'll see thousands of illuminated hand-carved jack-o'-lanterns everywhere you look. Some are the standard fare, but the real attractions are the giant creatures made entirely of carved pumpkins. ( adults, kids 5–17)Photo: courtesy of Historic Hudson Valley
Hear a Chilling Tale: Irving's "Legend"
For a spooky night of ghost stories, head to Sleepy Hollow's 325-year-old Old Dutch Church to see a live candlelit performance of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by master storyteller Jonathan Kruk. If his dramatic retelling isn't enough to scare you silly, the accompanying organ music certainly will. ( adults, kids under 18; advance purchase required)
Dinner with the Kids: Horsefeathers
Named after the Marx Brothers movie, this family-friendly restaurant serves pub-style food that gets high marks from locals. "It has the biggest, juiciest burgers in town," says Monique. With its literary vibe—shelves of old books and murals of famous authors line the walls—the eatery feels more like a reading room than a place to grab a bite with the family. But once you see the extensive menu, you'll be glad you stopped in: Even the pickiest kids are bound to find something they like.Photo: courtesy of Jim Logan
A Piece of Musical History: Tarrytown Music Hall
Built in 1885, this architectural jewel once attracted such well-heeled Tarrytown residents as the Rockefellers and the Vanderbilts. Today, its restored Queen Anne brick exterior and art deco interior are as much a lure as the hall's diversity of entertainment, from concerts (big names such as Bruce Springsteen and Tony Bennett have played here) to classic film showings. "The acoustics are tremendous, and since it's small, every seat is a good one," says Monique.
Sweet Indulgence: Chiboust Bistro + Bakery
For a taste of Paris, grab a table at this petite cafe-style bakery for handmade French pastries and desserts: flaky chocolate croissants, tempting crème brûlées, chaussons aux pommes ("apple slippers," the French answer to an apple turnover) and other specialties, plus the signature chiboust—a passionfruit custard. "My neighbor Kim thinks this place is just as phenomenal as I do," says Monique. "And she should know—she lived in France for years!"Photo: courtesy of Historic Hudson Valley
Explore a Graveyard:Evening Lantern Tour
Find out what ghostly secrets lurk in the graveyard where the Headless Horseman is said to roam. Kerosene lantern in hand, you'll be guided on a tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, stopping first at author Washington Irving's grave, then heading to the 19th-century receiving tomb, which was famously featured in the film House of Dark Shadows. Along the way, you'll see a Revolutionary War monument as well as the resting place of luminaries like William Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, and learn the meaning behind cryptic gravestone symbols.
